What it actually means to live
Christ As Us

I've been writing about faith for most of my adult life. Not because I have it figured out — but precisely because I don't. These are the articles, prayers, and questions I keep coming back to. The ones that said something true about God, and something true about us.

The most honest thing I can say about my faith is this: I believe not because everything makes sense, but because the alternative — that none of this means anything — makes even less sense to me. I write from that place. Always have.

50 Bible Verses About Helping Others: 8 Themes on Generosity & Service

"This one surprised me. I thought I knew what the Bible said about generosity. I didn't — not really. It goes so much deeper than dropping coins in a collection plate."

From Leviticus to Luke, Scripture builds a comprehensive theology of helping that goes far beyond what most of us were taught in Sunday school. Organised by theme: the poor, the neighbour, the stranger, even the enemy. Love your neighbor as yourself is not a suggestion — it is the second greatest commandment, spoken by Jesus himself.

Pope Leo Prays in Mosque: Should Christians Be Concerned?

"My honest answer is yes — cautiously. Not because visiting a mosque is sinful. It isn't. But what happened in Algeria crossed a theological line that his own Vatican had been careful to maintain just months earlier."

When Pope Leo faced Mecca alongside the imam in Algeria, he crossed a line his own Vatican had carefully maintained just months before in Istanbul. Christians can love Muslims, befriend Muslims, enter mosques — but we cannot suggest that Christianity and Islam are simply different roads to the same God. Prayer direction is a declaration of allegiance. That matters.

Godly Mothers in the Bible: Women Who Changed History

"Hannah prayed for years before Samuel was born. Her prayers shaped a prophet who shaped a nation. The entire trajectory of Israel's monarchy traces back to a mother on her knees. That kind of long-game faith undoes me every time."

Hannah's prayers shaped a prophet. Jochebed's courage saved a deliverer. Mary's yes changed everything. A godly mother isn't perfect — she's faithful. And her prayers may bear fruit for generations she will never live to see. What mothers teach today shapes the church of tomorrow.

40 Morning Prayers to Start Your Day: Prayers for Every Need

"I wrote these because I was tired of generic prayer lists that sound polished but feel hollow. These ones are honest — written for the mornings when you wake up already carrying something heavy before the day has even started."

40 original prayers across 8 categories — strength, peace, protection, family, anxiety, courage, and more. Organised by what you actually need that morning, not by what sounds good in a devotional. Bookmark this and return to it. The most-read thing I've put my name to.

What Does the Bible Say About Leaving a Toxic Relationship?

"This is the article I get the most messages about. People have been told — by pastors, by well-meaning church members — that staying in an abusive situation is the Christian thing to do. It is not. And I will keep saying so."

Nowhere does Scripture command someone to endure ongoing abuse in the name of Christian submission. Biblical submission is a voluntary gift given in the context of love and safety — not forced compliance through fear or manipulation. God is your refuge, not your cage. That distinction matters enormously, and the church has not always been honest about it.

What Is the Unforgivable Sin? Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit Explained

"In over twenty years of ministry, I cannot count how many people have come to me terrified that they've committed this sin. Almost none of them had. The worry itself is the evidence — the Holy Spirit is still at work in you."

The unforgivable sin is not a moment of anger at God, a blasphemous thought, or a period of doubt. It is a settled, deliberate, final rejection of the Spirit who alone can lead you to forgiveness. It requires full knowledge and willful, persistent hardening. You cannot stumble into it accidentally — and genuine fear that you have committed it is itself proof that you haven't.

A thought on the church today

I think the church has done a poor job of holding two things together at once: God's holiness and God's nearness. We either make Him so holy He feels unreachable — a distant judge waiting to catch us out — or so friendly that He requires nothing and costs nothing. The Bible holds both in tension. And it's that tension, not the resolution of it, where real faith actually lives. That's what I try to write toward.

How to Overcome Anxiety Through Faith in Jesus Christ

"Philippians 4:6 is one of the most quoted and least understood verses in the New Testament. 'Don't be anxious' is not a command to feel differently — it's an invitation to bring it all to God rather than carry it alone. The peace that follows is not the absence of worry. It's the presence of God in the middle of it."

Seven biblical steps for when anxiety takes hold before the day has even begun — racing thoughts, a tight chest, a sense of dread before your feet hit the floor. Consistency in applying these principles is what leads to lasting transformation. God's grace is sufficient even when the struggle persists, just as Paul discovered with his thorn in the flesh.

Bible Verses for Mothers: Comfort, Strength & Blessing

"God doesn't overlook the sleepless nights, the quiet sacrifices, or the prayers whispered over sleeping children. He sees them. Scripture says so, clearly and repeatedly, and I think that bears saying as often as possible."

Organised by theme — comfort, strength, wisdom, protection, blessing. For every kind of mother and every kind of season: the exhausting newborn years, the difficult teenager years, the grief of the empty nest. God's word covers all of it, and the prayers of a faithful mother are never wasted.

About the author

Rev George R. Willing

Pastor · Faith Writer · 20+ Years in Ministry

I've been in pastoral ministry for over twenty years — most of it in small churches where you know everyone by name, sit with people in their worst moments, and preach to the same faces every Sunday. That kind of ministry teaches you things no seminary course ever could.

I started writing publicly because I kept having the same conversations — about doubt, about prayer, about whether God actually hears us, about what the Bible really says versus what people assume it says. Christ As Us is where I write those conversations down. No pulpit polish. No institutional hedging. Just what I actually think, shaped by two decades of walking with people through faith and the absence of it.

I believe Scripture is living and active. I believe God hears every prayer. And I believe the church does its best work when it is honest about the questions it cannot answer as well as the ones it can.

Frequently asked questions
Who is Rev George R. Willing?

Rev George R. Willing is a pastor and faith writer with over 20 years of ministry experience. He writes about everyday Christian living, prayer, and what the Bible actually says about the questions people are really asking. Christ As Us is his personal faith journal.

What is Christ As Us?

Christ As Us is a personal faith journal written by Rev George R. Willing. It covers morning prayers, Bible verses, theological questions, and honest first-person reflections on what it means to live out Christian faith in everyday life — including the hard parts.

Does God hear my prayers?

Yes. Scripture is clear that God hears every prayer — He is sovereign over everything He created (Psalm 139:1-4). The deeper question is not whether God is aware of your prayer, but how He responds. His timing is always perfect, even when it does not match ours, and His answer is always shaped by what He knows is truly best (Jeremiah 29:11).

What is the best morning prayer?

The best morning prayer is an honest one. Before reaching for your phone, take a moment to acknowledge that the day belongs to God. A simple prayer — "Lord, before this day takes hold of me, let me first take hold of You" — is a powerful way to begin. For 40 original morning prayers covering every need, the full collection on Higher Praise is the most comprehensive starting point.

What does the Bible say about anxiety?

Philippians 4:6-7 is the most direct passage: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." This is not a command to feel differently — it is an invitation to bring your anxiety to God rather than carry it alone. The peace that follows is not the absence of worry, but the presence of God in the middle of it.

What is the unforgivable sin?

Jesus described the unforgivable sin as blasphemy against the Holy Spirit (Matthew 12:31-32). This is not a moment of anger, a period of doubt, or words spoken against God in despair. It refers to a settled, deliberate, and final rejection of the Holy Spirit's work — permanently closing oneself off from the only path to forgiveness. Crucially: if you are worried about having committed it, you almost certainly have not. Genuine concern about your spiritual state is itself evidence that the Holy Spirit is still at work in your heart.
